Amanda Brugel
Pointe Claire in Montreal's West Island is a small, little town that is a bit sleepy. The West Island has a lot of different communities. For those who haven't heard of it often mistake it for an island that is west-facing. It is often cited as the birthplace of Amanda Brugel but while that may be true, her time there was short. Brugel was raised in Courtice near Oshawa Ontario. She aspired to be a professional dancer, but because of a huge expansion, she surpassed the dance partners she had. In a recent interview with the Toronto Star, she confessed that "In heels I am 6 feet 1 inches." Once I surpassed the size of my male friends and stopped dancing, I quit. Some former dancers switch to acting and in Brugel's situation, it was a suggestion from the drama instructor at her high school who encouraged her to go in that direction. She was a teacher at the time who advised her to pursue a role for the annual school production. She was the teacher who suggested that she take on a part in the school's annual production. It led to the award of a Fine Arts Talent Scholarship at York University where she attended the Theatre Program and graduated with an Associate of Fine Arts degree in 2000. For the past twenty years, Brugel's roles on television and the big screen have been numerous. Her role as Rita from the award-winning series The Handmaid's Tale was her most famous. Brugel is the only Canadian actress in Season 1 and only appeared occasionally.
